One of the most common questions we hear from our Atlanta patients is “How long do breast implants last?” As with all medical devices, breast implants are not meant to last forever. Eventually, they will wear out and need to be replaced. But in most cases, you can expect your breast implants to last for at least 15-20 years.
There are various reasons that breast implants may need to be replaced:
- You might change your mind – There are countless women who want large breasts when they are young and then decide later in life they want smaller breasts again. In such cases, breast implants can either be removed entirely or replaced with smaller implants.
- Breast implant rupture – Over time, the shell of your breast implants may wear out, resulting in a rupture. When this occurs, you will need a Atlanta breast augmentation revision procedure to remove the ruptured implant and replace it with a new one.
- Correction of complications – In the event that you experience complications such as rippling, capsular contracture, bottoming out, or breast implant displacement, Dr. Crispin may recommend removing and replacing the implant to address the condition.
- Replace old saline implants with silicone implants – This is particularly common among women who had breast augmentation performed prior to 2006 when saline implants were the only option available. Many women choose to replace their old saline implants with silicone breast implants since they provide a more natural look and feel.
