What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of a man’s breasts with excess glandular tissue, fat, and sometimes skin. This change often appears in puberty and worsens with age. It can also develop later in adulthood. The condition can sometimes affect one breast but not the other. Gynecomastia can be caused by genetics—your dad or another family member may have suffered from this condition—or it can be due to a hormonal imbalance. The use of anabolic steroids and excessive use of alcohol or marijuana can also lead to gynecomastia. Mild cases due only to excess fat in the breasts can sometimes be resolved with diet and exercise. Where hormonal imbalances or medications are the cause, hormone treatment or a change in medication may be the solution. However, only surgery can correct the problem when excess glandular tissue or skin is involved.

How Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Male breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The specific approach and technique used will depend on the improvements being made. Two surgical techniques may be used:

Liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the breasts. A small incision is made, through which a thin surgical tube, or cannula, is inserted to break up and extract excess fat. Some glandular tissue can also be removed via liposuction.

Tissue excision is used to remove excess skin and glandular tissue. The placement and size of the incisions will depend on the unique changes being made.

Using either or both techniques, the chest is sculpted for natural-looking masculine contours that complement your frame. The incisions are closed and protected with a sterile dressing when all changes have been made. As male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure, you will be released to go home after the effects of the anesthesia subside. You should arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you home.

What Can I Expect After My Gynecomastia Procedure?

Plan to rest at home for a few days after your surgery. You may initially experience some discomfort, which can be managed with pain medication. You will wear a compression garment for the first few weeks after surgery to minimize potential swelling and provide support to healing tissues. Most patients return to work five to seven days after surgery. You may resume light exercise 30 days after your procedure and more strenuous exercise in 60 days.

Dr. Crispin and his staff will provide you with detailed instructions on:

While the improvements from your surgery will be visible immediately, it will take some time for bruising and residual swelling to disappear. Final results will be visible three to six months after your surgery.

Atlanta Male Breast Reduction | Gynecomastia - FAQs With Dr. Mark Crispin

The results of male breast reduction are permanent if you maintain your weight by following a healthy lifestyle and avoid any medications or drugs contributing to your breasts’ enlargement. If you gain significant weight, fat can accumulate again in your breasts. The use of certain medications and drugs, including steroids, can also contribute to breast enlargement, even after your surgery.

Male breast reduction is a cosmetic procedure, so your decision to have the surgery is based on how you feel about your body. Male breast reduction surgery can make you feel better about yourself if you:

  • Avoid social situations where you might be expected to take off your shirt
  • Are self-conscious about the appearance of your chest when it is exposed with an intimate partner
  • Are you embarrassed about the appearance of your chest when wearing a T-shirt or a top made of thin material

Men can benefit from breast reduction surgery at any age, though the most common ages to have the procedure are during the teenage years and when men are over 35. If you are under 18, you will need your parent’s consent to have the surgery.

If you are significantly overweight, it’s best to get to a healthy weight range before considering breast reduction surgery. Overall, weight loss might resolve the problem of enlarged breasts.
If you have lost a significant amount of weight and still have stubborn pockets of fat in your breasts, male breast reduction surgery using liposuction may correct this.
