Rhinoplasty, more commonly called a “nose job,” is an operation in which cartilage and sometimes bones are reshaped to make the nose more aesthetic, more symmetrical, and/or more functional. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis. When done with small incisions inside the nose, the procedure is called a closed rhinoplasty; one also entailing an additional incision across the column of the nose is called an open rhinoplasty.

A rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to achieve a patient’s cosmetic goals. Common alterations may include bump smoothing along the bridge of the nose, refining the nasal tip, narrowing a wide nose to be more balanced and proportionate to your face, and corrective surgery after an injury. Since the nose is essential to the respiratory system, breathing through the nose may also be improved.
A septoplasty is corrective surgery to improve breathing impairments, such as a deviated septum. The nasal septum is the wall that separates your nose into right and left sides. Breathing complications may occur when the septum is crooked.
Rhinoplasties are complex operations requiring a highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeon. Due to the 3-D structure and location of the nose, very small alterations—measured in millimeters—may have a large impact postoperatively. Therefore, there is little margin of error and no formulaic approach. Dr. Crispin tailors each step of a rhinoplasty to your specific anatomy and unique situation to achieve a natural, more proportionate look.
You will have a nasal splint on the outside of your nose for 5 to 7 days. Usually there are no sutures (stitches) to remove and any potential bruising resolves in 1 week.
Rhinoplasty patients are generally away from work or school for 1 week. You can resume normal activities at 7 days and routine exercise at 1 month. It is important to protect the nose from any direct trauma for 6 months after your surgery. Abstain from wearing glasses or sunglasses for 4 weeks after surgery.
1) Can I see what I will look like before surgery is performed?
Yes! Patients and doctors alike can benefit from using 3-D imaging software to plan a rhinoplasty procedure. Before and after images of you can be available at your first consultation.
2) Will my nose be packed?
No. We use a splint composed of a soft material with holes to facilitate your breathing.
3) What is a revisional rhinoplasty?
Statistics reveal that approximately 25% of first-time rhinoplasties require surgical revision. Revision rhinoplasty is generally more difficult and therefore, requires a surgeon trained in the specialty of rhinoplasty to maximize your result.
4) How do I choose a rhinoplasty surgeon?
Rhinoplasty is a complicated operation that requires a skillful, well-trained surgeon. After board certification in plastic surgery, Dr. Crispin was selected as one of two plastic surgeons in the world to attend that year’s renowned Aesthetic Surgery fellowship at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital—the aesthetic hospital associated with New York University and Lenox Hill Hospital. During his time there, Dr. Crispin participated in hundreds of cosmetic surgery procedures while maintaining a busy aesthetic practice of his own. Since then, he has served as teaching staff at numerous national and international plastic surgery meetings. He is also is a member of the AO (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Osteosythesefragen) teaching organization, which establishes fundamentals in surgical principles for facial procedures. Beyond grateful to Dr. Crispin for the incredible results I received from my Rhinoplasty. I have disliked my nose for as long as I can remember. I finally got the courage to see Dr. Crispin after receiving a referral from another doctor. He made me feel very comfortable by letting me know I will not look like a different person but instead receive a more proportionate nose for my face. My healing time was quick and easy. I absolutely love my nose and for the first time in my life, I’m not self-conscience having my picture taken. Thank you Dr. Crispin for helping me feel beautiful!
