Hundreds of thousands of women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Thankfully, a mastectomy, partial mastectomy or lumpectomy can stop the progression of cancer and often save lives. Unfortunately, these procedures may cause you to feel less feminine and lose self-confidence. Atlanta breast reconstruction can recreate a breast either using breast expanders and breast implants or using other techniques. It is with this in mind that Congress passed the Federal Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act, requiring insurance to pay for breast reconstruction following cancer removal. During your initial consultation with board certified Atlanta reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mark Crispin, you can learn more about breast reconstruction in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
Breast Reconstruction Options
Depending on the size of the tumor removed and other unique factors of your anatomy, Dr. Crispin may recommend one of two options for Atlanta breast reconstruction procedures:
- Tissue expansion – in which a silicone balloon expander is inserted under the skin and gradually filled with a sterile saltwater solution ultimately creating room for a breast implant.
- Tissue flap surgery – in which muscles, fat, and skin are removed from your back, abdomen or lower tummy and used to build a new breast.
In some cases, a breast implant is used. In other cases, your own fat and tissue can create a new breast mound. The technique used by Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Crispin will be determined by your needs and customized to fulfill your unique wishes and desired outcome.
Breast Reconstruction Results
Atlanta breast reconstruction can be a physically and emotionally rewarding procedure, but it is important to remember that your breast will never look or feel exactly as it did prior to cancer removal. Georgia reconstructive surgery creates a new breast mound, but sensation will be different. Scarring is inevitable with this procedure and nipple sensitivity cannot be restored.
Despite the fact that breast reconstruction cannot entirely restore the function and original appearance of your breasts, the procedure may bring back feelings of femininity and confidence by restoring your breasts.
