One of the most important decisions you and board certified Atlanta cosmetic surgeon Dr. Mark Crispin will need to make prior to your Atlanta breast augmentation procedure is the type of breast implant that will best suit your unique cosmetic goals. At Crispin Plastic Surgery, both silicone and saline breast implants are offered for women interested in Atlanta breast surgery in Georgia.
Silicone Breast Implants
The outer shells of all breast implants are made from silicone, but silicone breast implants are also filled with silicone gel. Silicone implants arrive at Dr. Crispin’s practice pre-filled by the manufacturer. This means that certain incisions are required to accommodate the placement of this type of breast implant.
There are a number of benefits to silicone implants making them the most popular choice among our patients. Some advantages of silicone implants include:
- More natural look and feel.
- Suitable for women with little breast tissue to cover the implant.
- Less chance of cosmetic imperfections such as rippling and wrinkling.
- Lower risk of skin stretching.
- Approved for women ages 22 and older.
If a silicone breast implant ruptures, the rupture may be difficult to detect. Silicone implants hold their shape even if there is a tear, so your breast will most likely not look any different. For this reason, regular MRI scans are recommended for women with silicone breast implants.
Due to their natural look and feel, silicone implants remain the most popular choice for patients of Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. Crispin.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution after they have been placed inside the breast. This allows Dr. Crispin to make a smaller incision, which may reduce visible scarring. As an additional benefit, ruptures in saline implants are easier to detect, because the breast will have a deflated appearance when the implant ruptures.
Saline implants remain the only implant available for women aged 18 to 21. However, disadvantages of saline breast implants include:
- Do not look and feel as natural.
- Are more likely to ripple and wrinkle.
- Have a higher rate of breast droop.
- Are more prone to a complication called “double-bubble.”
Despite these disadvantages, many women still choose saline breast implants for their Atlanta plastic surgery procedure. Understanding that no two women have the same needs or desires, Dr. Crispin will go over the advantages of each Atlanta breast implant type and help you determine what is most likely to provide you with the look you desire.
